Understanding stress
Understanding stress is very important in order to manage it. Stress is the state when you feel you are under tremendous emotional or mental pressure. Stress is subjective; that is to say, what is stressful to one person might not be stressful to another person.
It is important to understand stress properly as it is a major cause of illness, accidents and violence. Thus it has a big impact on our personal and social lives.
Causes of stress
As human beings, we experience acute stress when we are faced with a dangerous or life threatening situation. This is an in- built mechanism all human beings have developed as a part of their evolution. It leads to the “fight or flight” response where hormones are released resulting in a sharp rise in blood pressure, heart rate and respiration. By these means, the body is prepared to fight the threat or run away from it. This is the way our bodies and physiological systems have developed and such responses are appropriate even now when we are faced with danger to our lives.
But the problem arises when this mechanism starts working in our modern world when we are faced with pressure filled situations. This is chronic stress where the “fight or flight” response is activated by anything from heavy traffic to dealing with your child. Over time, this response turns into a habit and it starts affecting our health and everyday lives.
Keeping this in mind, we can understand that there can be many causes of stress:
– Loss of a close one, employment or property
– Pressures at home
– Pressures at the workplace
– Problems of urban living
– Financial problems
– Relationship problems
Symptoms of stress
The release of hormones and the spike in rates of bodily processes affect the body and different physiological systems in the long run. The signs can be seen in various illnesses and conditions:
– Heart disease – Stroke – Depressed immune system – Drastic changes in body weight – Insomnia – Migraine – Irritable Bowel Syndrome
The psychological symptoms may include:
– Anxiety – Depression – Memory loss – Panic attacks
Stress may also result in increased use of stimulants, reckless behavior and other unwholesome activities which may affect the person’s life in a devastating manner
